Create the World's Next Great Nursing Business!

February 10, 20232 min read

The next great nursing business is just waiting to be discovered.

A lot of us believe we are limited to the degree we've earned. There's a belief that we are only as valuable as the nursing initials behind our name. Through the years nursing has become saturated with advanced practice degrees but what lies beyond these degrees?

I found myself questioning this years ago as the growth of advanced practice nursing degrees were emerging. Personally, I was quite content with my ADN nursing degree. It was being discussed at my hospital to mandate all nurses towards obtaining their BSN degree. I knew I could not even entertain this idea. My lack of interest in pursuing any further formal education was palpable.

When I learned that the pay increase would be $0.50 I completely opposed the idea of returning to school. Why would I want to accrue more student loan debt, or worse, tie myself to a hospital system for several years just because they paid for my education? I was not going in debt myself with time or money to anyone or any institution.

It was at that point I really began to investigate what other options were available for nurses. I began defining what I wanted my life to look like. What lifestyle did I want? The answers lied within me, they were not to be chosen for me by my boss, colleagues or hospital administration.

It was important for me to have control my income with no ceiling. I knew I could outwork others, so why were we all making the same base pay? I knew I wanted a schedule that I controlled. So why was I allowing someone else to determine my time? It was important to have weekends and holidays off, I had earned it.

When I started to look beyond the traditional roles of nurses, I found that there were nurses who had created businesses. These nurses were growing and thriving personally and professionally. These businesses were created out of solving problems while working at the bedside. Nurses are wonderful problem solvers. We see so many gaps in the health care system and we can be the solution. Nurses are innovative, creative and execute well.

I can't tell you how many times a product rolled out on my unit, and I remember thinking, I had the same idea years ago!

But, if you don't execute or act upon that idea, that's all it becomes - an idea.

To the nurses thinking, can I do this? Can I start a business? Can I create a product? I say YES to all of that. What if the solution, product, or nurse business/innovation lies within you to be created? Your nursing business could be the solution the world is waiting on!
